Little Donkey Mexican-Hoover, AL

Finally Open Again

Lynn and I were so excited to return to one of our favorite restaurants and have a sit down meal on real dishes.  We have really missed Little Donkey in Hoover and the friends we have made there the past year.  Nick Halfacre is the local owner of the restaurant and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.  He regularly comes to your table to talk to you and I have never seen him without a welcoming smile on his face.

We started out with their new chips, their guacamole (to die for), and salsa.  Although I like their previous thinner chips better, these new “Masienda” chips are thicker and quite famous with a large social following.  They are made from non-gmo heirloom corn and have a rich corn taste.  I also had a glass of sweet tea which is consistently good.

And For The Main Course

I ordered three of the delicious brisket tacos.  The flavor combination of tender, slow cooked brisket with cream sauce and fajita veggies is hard to beat.

Lynn normally orders the Green Goat salad with a side of brisket but she is on a restricted diet and ordered greens with pickled onions and brisket.

The normal green goat salad has mixed greens, fresh herbs, grape tomatoes, toasted almonds, goat cheese, and grilled herb vinaigrette. The goat cheese and almonds add an incredible flavor to the salad. I like to add brisket to the salad but you can also choose chicken, pork, shrimp, or fresh fish.

For Those Of You Who Enjoy A Drink Or Two

They have a wide assortment of Margarita's, Cocktails, Wine, Agua Frescas, Domestic Beers, and Mexican Beers.  The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable and they have 3 TV's in front of the bar and one outside on the patio.  You will be able to order food and eat at the bar again as soon as the Covid-19 restrictions are removed.

Safety and Sanitation

Little Donkey has dedicated an entire employee position to ensuring the safety and sanitation of their common areas and kitchen.  “Door Knob Bob” is equipped with a tool belt full of hand sanitizer, disposable towels, and disinfectant spray for your safety and peace of mind.  All the employees will be masked until the State of Alabama determines it is safe not to be.

Overall Impression

My family loves this restaurant. Their menu is extensive and full of goodies. including tacos, salads, fajitas, burritos, tortas, and enchiladas.  They also have some of the best fried chicken in town.  Lynn and I try to eat here weekly.  I highly recommend this restaurant. You can find their menu online and order to go if you prefer (www.thelittledonkey.com).
